Style on Screen were lucky enough to grab a quick chat with fashion designer and musician Nikki Lund! Not only is Nikki a successful designer who’s recently launched a ready to wear collection, but she’s also a talented singer/songwriter with a debut single coming out!
See what the talented Miss Lund had to say!…
How did you get into fashion designing and styling? I’ve been styling since I was very young, creating outfits and costumes for myself and my friends. I continued to build my interest and worked at Jill Stuart as a designer before starting my own line Eccentric Symphony, a few years after that Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) and myself started Nikki Rich, which is our fantastic ready to wear collection for women. I’ve designed numerous custom pieces from jackets to ball gowns, so I’m used to designing for lots of different styles and occasions.
Who’s your favourite celeb you’ve worked with? What was it you liked about them? Working with big name celebrities such as Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus has been fantastic — it’s always a blast to work with musicians, it provides another level you can connect on. We’ve been working a lot with Blake Shelton recently, creating clothing for both his tours and for his appearances on The Voice, and in addition to being a great guy, I love his sense of style, masculine and traditional, yet this season we’ve been branching out with the types of clothes and jackets we’ve been creating, giving them unique finishes and washes, little custom touches that make them truly his own.
If you could style anyone, who would it be and why? Jennifer Lawrence has such a fun outlook, it’d be great to work with a young woman who has such a wonderful sense of style and ownership of their look. She often takes chances that others might not, but has such a great attitude while doing it that she can get away with almost everything. It’s a rare x-factor, and people obviously gravitate to that.
We’d love to know more about your songwriting, tell us a bit about your music. I’ve been writing and performing for as long as I can remember, in different bands and on my own. The current music I’m writing has a definite house dance vibe, with strong vocals and catchy lyrics. I want to make music that people love, there’s nothing better than that connection. I have a room in my house where I love to write music and often stay up late just creating little songs and melodies on my computer — some are terrible, some are fantastic, but that’s all the work of actually making things, it’s all a part of the creative process.
You’re obviously very talented and creative, but what’s your first love? Music or fashion? The wonderful thing is I can’t really remember which came first, and that I don’t have to pick just one. Music and fashion go together hand in hand as much of the creative process is similar — music can evoke a mood or an emotion with only a few notes, and fashion is similarly able to go many different places. We might be divided by languages or beliefs, but music and fashion can bring many different types of people together in a shared bond.
Which musicians do you think have great style? Joan Jett is always one of my favorites, along with Blondie. I think one of the most important facets of having great style is being true to yourself, no matter what others say and both of them are huge style icons for me. What might be outlandish today sets the tone for fashion tomorrow.
Which fashion brand could you not live without? Nikki Rich of course! Other than that, I’m a big fan of Valentino and Louboutin. They understand what it is women want and they’re able to create timeless products while reinventing themselves in the process.
We believe you and Kim Kardashian are childhood friends, do you ever exchange fashion advice with one another? How funny, all the recent talk about Kim and I came out because of an interview I did with Genlux Magazine where I mentioned that we were childhood friends. We haven’t spoken recently, so I don’t really know!
If you could invite 3 designers to dinner (dead or alive) who would it be and why? Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, and Coco Chanel. Chanel has been a huge inspiration my whole life, McCartney because I think we share a lot of similar interests and themes in our work, and Lagerfeld because who else has such a strong, defined presence?
How important is social media’s role within fashion? Social media is important as it allows for immediate feedback and you can stay connected with fans, but it’s important not to let yourself get bogged down in all the busy-work of social media. Too much input can radically alter what it is you’re trying to do — sometimes not in a good way!
