The Oscars Red Carpet Review! 2014
Date: 03-03-2014, Author: Katie Smith, Categories: Celeb Style
Oh my god, what a night! The 2014 Awards season ended in SPECTACULAR style on Sunday at the 86th Academy Awards. It had selfies, pizza, Leo DiCaprio and more red carpet fashion glamour than you can shake a stick at! And we’re almost positive no one will ever top Ellen DeGeneres’ impeccable hosting job – what a woman!
We had fantastic conversation with those of you who stayed up with us throughout the red carpet… And we think we’ll be making our little Fashion Head-To-Heads a thing from now on! We love your input, fashionistas! And we had a great time live tweeting our last carpet of award season! *Sad face*
If you missed it, have no fear! We’ve tracked all the key trends of the night here, in the most glamorous blog post you’ve ever seen!
AND YOUR HOST…
We’ve aaaalways loved Ellen’s sharp sense of style but who reaaaaaally knew she had such AMAZING Tux game?! She hit every trend on the head during the show – her flawless collection of custom made Saint Laurent Paris suits had you folks in a right tizzy! First, she stepped out in a blue velvet smoking jacket… (one of our favourite trends!) Then, she managed to upstage the finely dressed Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey in a crisp ivory tuxedo suit. But it was her snazzy black glittery Hedi Slimane-special Tux jacket that really wowed the crowd. Never mind the Dolby Theatre – we’d wear that jacket out to the shops!!
(Even her pre-Oscar style was on point. Ellen posted a twitpic of PeaceLoveWorld’s ‘I Am Happy’ zipped hoodie that became our most talked about item of the night! The bad news? It’s sold out. The good news? You can get your hands on a GREAT alternative from the same brand here: http://fave.co/1kMTcPx)
#TRENDALERT: IT DON’T MATTER IF YOU’RE BLACK OR WHITE!
They say you can never go wrong in a black dress… and they’ve never been so RIGHT! Perfectly showcased on the carpet by stunning Olivia Wilde, regal Charlize Theron, edgy Anne Hathaway and newly brunette Margot Robbie who worked a Saint Laurent gown with back bow detail. Your favourite? Charlize’s Dior gown was a big talking point on our radar on the night and you thought she wowed in that classic black silhouette!
On a lighter note… (pun intended!) Naomi Watts took the helm of #TeamWhite. Her sleek Calvin Klein gown was complimented perfectly with a pop of bold red on the lip. Fast on her tails was the gorgeous First Lady of this year’s Oscars, Portia de Rossi in ivory Naheem Khan – one of your favourites in white on the night! And we also saw Kate Hudson bringing back the Golden Globes cape trend in icy Versace. But the real stars in white were the winning two-some, Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey, who were both clad in sharp white Tux jackets. The jury might still be out on this fashion head to head; while we love Jared’s little red bow tie, we reckon Matthew steals it with that suave Texan swagger! Lads, we suggest you get on board with this trend!
#TRENDALERT: GOING NUDE!
It’s safe to say that this year’s red carpet was dominated by pales and nudes! It’s a trend we’ve seen picking up speed through Award Season and it all came to a head on Sunday.
Best Actress Winner Cate Blanchett, Jessica Biel, Sarah Paulson and Kristen Bell all managed to expertly pull of the look. Even Angelina Jolie opted for an Elie Saab nude full length, full sleeve sheer gown (Gasp! She didn’t wear black!) Her look split Style On Screen right down the middle! Some of you LOVED it; it was a welcome departure from her usual style… but the rest of you were just not that into it! Is she ever going to top that Saint Laurent tux from the BAFTAs?! Either way, we think she looked GORGEOUS.
Let’s not forget our favourite Fashion Police fashionistas, Giuliana Rancic and Kelly Osbourne, who both headed up the nude and embellishment trends in Paolo Sebastian and Badgley Mischka. You couldn’t get enough of their chic looks and voted them among Style On Screen’s best dressed. Who had the edge? It was Giuliana’s perfect princess gown that stole your heart; she DEFINITELY made it into our top 5. You can channel that gorgeous colour in this nude gown: http://fave.co/1hBNpMr
JUST A LITTLE POP OF COLOUR, PLEASE:
We just LOVE a bit of red on the red carpet! First out of the gate was Kelly Ripa who absolutely SLAYED in red Roland Mouret. The pint sized TV host looked incredible on the arm of co-host Michael Strahan, who was also head to toe in a burgundy suit. Channel that gorgeous striking red with Mango here: http://bit.ly/1kMBZpf And there was no surprises from Jennifer Lawrence who effortlessly turned it out in red Dior. But it was the unlikely Bette Midler who became the Red Queen in stunning embroidered Reem Acra. Can you believe this lady is 68 years old?! 68!! Wow. She dominated our radar… just goes to show that no matter your age, you can still be considered a style icon! And Bette was the ultimate Queen of style, dahhling! Over in the blue corner, we found ourselves having a little fashion head to head! Best Actress nominees Sandra Bullock and Amy Adams both rocked up wearing slightly different shades of navy and while we agree that they both looked stunning, Sandra’s deep midnight Alexander McQueen gown swept the carpet out from underneath Amy’s Gucci dress. *Ding* *Ding*… Round 1 to Sandra! BUT NOW… LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE PRESENT TO YOU, YOUR BEST DRESSED OF THE NIGHT: MISS LUPITA NYONG’O! The most hotly anticipated look of the night did not let us down! Her gorgeous Cinderella ’Nairobi Blue’ Prada gown was the stuff dreams are made of. We’re soooo jealous! The princess gown tops off an incredible award season for Lupita; we’re officially crowning her Queen of the Red Carpet FOREVER. Miss Nyong’o, we salute you!
